Portrait Photography and the Black Press historically have served to present authentic and positive images and narratives about Black people and the community.
This summer, our Youth Curator’s built on their storytelling and interviewing skills to produce a museum-quality exhibition that enlightens and educates the public about social and racial justice through media representation. Throughout the program, the students learned research, writing, photography, communication and design skills to curate an exhibition about the Black press in Minnesota. They also had guest speakers Tracey Williams-Dillard, CEO and Publisher of the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, and Daniel Bergin of TPT television, share their experience with them. The exhibition, BLACK PRESS IN MINNESOTA: Telling Our Own Stories, has two components, an art exhibition and a history exhibition. The art exhibition, a contemporary contribution to our archive of history in Minnesota, features community portraits taken by the students during UROC’s 2024 Juneteenth celebration. The history exhibition, a homage to the journalists and archivists that document the history that we look upon today, focuses on the history of Black press in Minnesota.
The MAAHMG Youth Curator Program is funded by a grant from the Minnesota State Legacy Fund from the Minnesota State Legislature.
