Okra and Indigo: A Meal and Wearable Art-Making Experience, Taught By Exhibition’s Artist Azania Tripp.
MAAHMG Artist in Residence Azania Tripp will be hosting a Community Workshop on Saturday, February 17, from 1 – 3:30pm at the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery. The workshop will have three parts, a meal, storytelling tour for Okra and Indigo, and an art workshop. Spaces are limited, registration is required at $25/person. Free parking is available in the ramp attached to the building.
About the workshop:
Part 1: Community Meal
1:00PM – 1:40PM
A community meal will be shared with the group participants. It will be catered by Lachelle Cunningham’s catering company Chelles Kitchen Catering.
Expected Menu: Chicken Tagine, Berbere Spiced Lamb, Jerk Shrimp & Grits, Jollof Rice, Macaroni & Cheese, Fried Plaintain, Collard Greens, Coconut Cornbread with citrus butter, Sweet Potato Cobbler
Part 2: Storytelling tour for Okra and Indigo by artist Azania Tripp
1:40PM -2:30PM
Through a storytelling tour, Tripp will discuss how High on the Hog by Dr. Jessica Harris inspired Okra and Indigo. How she created five portraits of Black/African American Minnesotans. Her experience working with Frog Tree Farms to build a family-size table, and how she customized 6 chairs for the exhibition to spotlight Black/African American historical chefs.
Part 3: Obsidian Pause Wearable Art Workshop
2:30-3:30PM
Participants will be guided through mindfulness college exercises to design one-of-a-kind paper collage accessories. Participants can choose to have; 1 pair of earrings, a magnet (2x), or a pin/broach (2x). Scissors are the primary tool.
– All supplies are included
– Participants are welcome to bring their own paper
– The wearable art jewelry has a longevity of at least 6+ years
*After the workshop, the artist will modify each person’s visual art into wearable pieces. It takes the artist 3 weeks after the workshop to make the visual art into jewelry/accessories.
